"Citizens of the Earth" is the winning essay in the 2013 National WWII Museum student essay contest

The essay contest entries this year were written in response to the question, “How can people who disagree still work together for victory?” The first place high school winner is Rachel Lim, an 11th grade student from Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, VA, USA.

Ms. Lim's essay, Citizens of the Earth, is a beautiful exploration of this young woman's insight about World War II and what was achieved when "…the difference in ideologies was eventually overcome by the shared objective of peace and order," and how she embraced this principle in her high school experience.

"In the end, we are all humans. We inherently have sympathy toward the suffered, resentment toward the oppressive, and desire for peace and happiness. When we fully understand that all of us are citizens of the earth, when we truly see the beauty of the World War II memorial, then all the clamorous and cacophonous sounds stemming from disagreements will quiet down."
